At first, you might think of four-wheeled vehicles – but technology has advanced further.
Now, motorcycles can also drive autonomously. During a two-year collaboration with the BMW Group under the leadership of Dipl.-Ing. Stefan Hans, Sensodrive’s team contributed their extensive technical expertise to the successful development of one of the first autonomous motorcycles.
The BMW R 1200 GS can start, accelerate, brake, and – using an automatically deployed stand – come to a complete stop on its own. Even on winding roads, the motorcycle maintains the perfect lean angle, following the ideal racing line while optimizing traction or braking points as required.
Sensodrive contributes to greater safety and riding enjoyment for motorcyclists
During the development with BMW, Sensodrive was responsible for controlling the handlebar system. The torque-controlled drive, fully integrated into the motorcycle’s steering column, was developed and manufactured specifically for this project. Our development team also handled the regulation of steering angles and steering torques.
Of course, the goal of this innovative technology is not to replace the rider – it is about developing assistance systems that, much like in cars, can detect risky situations early and support the motorcyclist in hazardous conditions.
The BMW R 1200 GS is now collecting the driving dynamics data needed to develop these assistance systems – for greater safety and riding pleasure in the future of motorcycling!
